In 1990, the cities of Ellsorth and Jewell entered in a joint law enforcement agreement. In 1997, the city of Stanhope, Iowa, also entered into the agreement. The EJS Police Department was then created and has been in existence since that time.
The police department currently has two officers:
- Chief Steve Butler (pictured on the right), who has been with the EJS Department since 1996. Prior to becoming Chief of Police,
he was employed by the Tama Police Department for 14 years.
- Officer Ryan Hanssen (pictured on the left), who came to the police department in 2007.
Both Chief Butler and Officer Hanssen are certified EMT-B's and work closely with all three ambulance services that cover the cities of Ellsworth, Jewell, and Stanhope.
The department offers the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program to the South Hamilton Community School and the department also actively participates in SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) as part of a community policing program.
The department is always looking for ways to improve interactions within the communities and are always willing to talk to any community group.
Feel free to contact either Chief Butler or Officer Hanssen for any of your policing needs: (515) 827-5477.
