Max E. Whitlock, a legendary Iowa educator, will be honored during the Saturday concert, July 22nd, hosted by the "Original Surflink" band. "The 'boys' are back in town to celebrate and thank Max E. Whitlock for his guidance from 40 years ago. Max Whitlock will be honored with the song "Band Room Man", written and recorded by Ray Burkhart.
The "Original Surflinks" will be playing a two-night concert in their hometown of Jewell, Iowa, July 21st and 22nd. The concerts are open to the public and will coincide with the Class of 1966 Reunion.
Stroll down Memory Lane
In 1964, educators were somewhat leery of the new rock and roll emerging from coast to coast and continent to continent. The new look of long hair and electricity had many music teachers pulling out their hair. Max, on the other hand, had faith in his boys and not only went out of his way to support us amongst the school faculty but would drive many Friday nights to wherever this rock and roll band would be playing and proudly stand by the side of the band.
The respect was mutual. When Max wanted us to support his band, we were there. For example, band members were participants in the All-State Iowa Orchestra and Symphonic band that has always been a prestigious collection of Iowa's finest musicians. Max introduced a new concept to 16-year olds, "work ethic".
Max, retired for several years now, had been selected as teacher of the year twice in his career. Many students have gained life long lessons from this dedicated man. His children have gone on to become college professors in the field of music.
When one goes back and tries to analyze the good decisions and the bad from our youth, so often what we remember are the craziest doings. Probably one of the "Surflinks" best decisions was to stay under the guidance of this man.
